Why I Fell in Love with River Cruising
When people ask me what makes a river cruise so special, they probably think it would be something like the great food and wine, unpacking once, or being able to see so many places in a week.
And yes—all of those things are TRUE!
But after leading a group of nearly 30 travelers on the Rhine River, I realized that what makes a river cruise unforgettable isn't the ship.
It's the friendships.
Small Ship. Big Connections.
Unlike an ocean cruise with thousands of passengers, a river cruise feels intimate from the very first day.
With only around 150 guests onboard, you quickly begin recognizing familiar faces. Before long, the people you met over a welcome drink become the people you're waving to every morning over coffee.
Even with our group of 30, no one felt obligated to spend every moment together—and that's exactly what made it so enjoyable. But we all agreed that the daily happy hour followed by dinner was the best part of the day. Being able to share your daily adventures with others is a highlight!
Every Day Is Your Own Adventure
One of my favorite things about river cruising is that everyone can travel their own way. Each morning after breakfast, we headed off in different directions. Some chose the gentle walking tour through charming villages. Others tackled a guided hike or bike ride. Some simply wandered the local streets, found a café, and soaked in the atmosphere. Everyone experienced the destination differently.
Then Comes Happy Hour...
No matter where the day took us, something magical happened every evening. Without making plans or sending texts, we all naturally found each other during Sip & Sail Happy Hour. Glasses of local wine in hand, we'd gather in the lounge or on the Sun Deck and ask the same question:
"So...what did you do today?"One couple would share photos from their bike ride through vineyards. Another would describe the hidden bakery they stumbled across. Someone else would rave about the castle tour they almost skipped. Those conversations often inspired what everyone wanted to do in the next port. It became one of my favorite parts of every day.
Dinner Isn't Just a Meal
Then we'd make our way into the dining room. River cruise dinners aren't rushed. They're meant to be enjoyed. Course after course of beautifully prepared, incredible locally sourced food...Local wines that change with the region...Desserts that somehow everyone had room for (or we pretended to) ...And conversations that lasted well beyond the last bite.
More Than a Vacation
When we boarded the ship, many people were meeting for the very first time. By the end of the cruise, they were friending each other on social media and talking about the next adventure. That doesn't happen by accident. It happens because river cruising naturally creates opportunities to connect. You spend your days exploring independently, but your evenings together. It's the perfect balance of personal adventure and shared experiences.
About our trip
Here is the itinerary we used for our cruise. One of the things I love aboutAmaWaterways is their app—it has your entire itinerary, daily schedule, maps, and all of the included excursion options. There are multiple choices in almost every port, so you can tailor each day to your own interests and activity level. I love that they have options for different mobility levels.
Would I do a river cruise in the summer again?
Probably not.
One thing to know about river cruising is that river levels are controlled by nature. During very hot, dry summers, water levels can become too low for the ships to safely navigate certain sections of the river. If that happens, the cruise line may bus you between ships or around affected areas.
If summer is the only time you can travel, go for it! I would never let that possibility stop me from experiencing a river cruise.
For me, however, the bigger factor is simply the heat. June, July, and August can be quite warm throughout much of Europe. If you love hot weather, you'll probably have a wonderful time. I just don't enjoy traveling in those temperatures anymore.
My favorite times to cruise Europe's rivers are: late April and May, September and October, November, and December (especially for the Christmas Markets!)
The weather is generally more comfortable, the scenery is beautiful, and I personally think it's an even more enjoyable way to experience Europe. Yes it does get darker earlier.
Why I Love Leading River Cruises
As a travel advisor, I certainly love helping people discover Europe. But my favorite moment is watching strangers become friends. Watching someone save a seat at dinner for someone they met just three days earlier. Watching people laugh over stories from the day's adventures. Those memories last far longer than any castle or cathedral. If you've been wondering whether a river cruise is right for you, know this:
Yes, you'll see incredible places.
Yes, you'll enjoy amazing food and wine.
But the thing you'll probably remember most...
... are the people you shared it with. And hopefully you will see them again, maybe on another river cruise.
